Preconceptual Counselling

Pre-conceptual counselling is for any women requiring health education, risk assessment and intervention before conception to reduce the chances of poor perinatal outcomes.

It normally involves a medical checkup before pregnancy to help identify risks and addressing those risks to ensure you're as healthy as possible when you get pregnant and to discuss the plan of management for when you do decide to be proceed with a pregnancy.  

A preconception checkup is especially important if you've already had a premature baby, a baby with a birth defect, a miscarriage or stillbirth.


A few important items during pre-conceptual counselling include:

  • Underweight

  • Substance Use

  • Toxin Exposure

  • Environmental Exposures

  • Medication Exposures

  • Diabetes Management

  • Infectious Diseases Management

  • Management of Chronic Disease

  • Genetic Disorders and Carrier States

  • Folic Acid

  • Short Interval Pregnancy (less than 18 months)

  • Smoking

  • Alcohol Use

  • Obesity
